In 1948, two Air Force meteorologists broke a federal policy against forecasting tornadoes — and were right, eighteen times in a row. This week, Edge of the Story asks what happens when that same instinct shows up again: AI cameras catching wildfires while they're still a single smoldering tree, and AI-assisted screening catching cancers a radiologist alone would have missed, backed by randomized controlled trials, not marketing copy.

But we don't stop there. This season has spent nine episodes checking the claims institutions make about themselves — so this week we turn the same scrutiny on the people opposing this technology, tracing a viral claim about livestock and data center noise back to its actual source, and sorting out what's a real, on-record grievance from what's an unverified number doing a lot of work online.

Julia brings headlines from a wildfire season already running hot on both sides of the U.S.-Canada border. And for once, the word over the door and the room behind it actually match.
