Description

This week, Pathlight HOME’s Carl Falconer and Danny Arroyo dive into the role of day and drop-in centers in ending homelessness — and how football lessons apply along the way.
Carl defines what day and drop-in centers are — safe, low-barrier spaces that meet immediate needs like food, showers, laundry, and case management while connecting people to housing and stability. Danny highlights Pathlight HOME’s own Pathways Drop-In Center, which has already helped residents move from crisis to housing.
Carl argues that day centers open the “front door” to housing by building trust and providing vital services. Danny counters that they can fall short when not connected to housing programs, leading to overcrowding and dependency. Together, they conclude that the most effective centers act as bridges, not endpoints — linking outreach directly to housing pathways.
Listener question: How does Pathlight HOME make residents feel at home?
Danny and Carl share that true community comes from connection — events like Bingo Nights, Thanksgiving dinners, resident councils, and volunteers from the wider community help residents create a place they can truly call home.
Day centers are crucial for re-engaging people who may be hesitant to seek help — but they must always lead back to housing and long-term stability.
