The patients who do well after hip surgery all share something in common. It is not age, fitness level, or who their surgeon is. It comes down to three specific factors. When all three line up, the outcomes are consistently strong.

In this episode, I'm going to break down the three factors that predict a good hip surgery outcome and show you how to check for them before and after your own procedure.

❓ QUESTIONS ANSWERED

Q: What predicts a good outcome after hip surgery?
A: The three biggest predictors are confirming the hip is the true pain source before surgery, a complete bony correction during surgery, and disciplined, consistent rehab afterward. When all three align, outcomes are consistently strong regardless of age or fitness level.

Q: How do doctors confirm the hip is actually causing the pain?
A: An ultrasound guided diagnostic injection of local anesthetic is placed directly into the hip joint. If symptoms drop significantly within minutes, the hip is likely the true source, and if they do not drop, another cause should be investigated before surgery.

Q: Why do some patients need a second hip surgery?
A: Most revision surgeries happen because the initial bony correction was not taken far enough, leaving some impingement behind. Asking your surgeon how they confirm the correction is complete during the procedure can help you avoid this.
