A lot of people end up with a brand new hip and the exact same pain. That happens when nobody checked whether the hip was ever the real problem in the first place. Before you agree to a hip replacement, there are four things worth finding out.

In this video, I'm going to walk you through the four questions I ask every patient before recommending hip replacement surgery.

❓ QUESTIONS ANSWERED
How do you know if hip pain is actually coming from the hip joint?
A diagnostic injection of numbing medicine is placed directly into the hip joint. If the pain settles down for a few hours, the hip joint is the source, and if nothing changes, the pain is likely coming from somewhere else like the lower back.

Does bone on bone on an X-ray mean you automatically need a hip replacement?
Not necessarily. Plenty of people have worn looking hips on imaging with very little pain, which is why the scan is only one piece of information and should never be the sole reason for surgery.

Is it normal to get a second opinion before a hip replacement?
Yes, a second opinion is completely normal for a decision this size and no surgeon should be offended by the request.
