We start along the Rio Grande, where pale desert frames a sudden surge of green. The Rio Grande Village Nature Trail surprised us with boardwalks and birdsong that felt more Louisiana than Chihuahuan Desert. A flood-damaged road kept us from the Hot Springs Historic Trail, so we traded soaking for summits and took local advice to tackle Lost Mine. With a knowledgeable guide from Big Bend Boating and Hiking, the Chisos Basin unfolded in layers—geology, plants, and long views that shift every step.
