Description

How can the United States combat human trafficking, drug running, and weapons smuggling while maintaining an orderly, humane border? This January 2024 conclusion to a four-part series connects enforcement with legal processing, support for border states, and efforts to reduce the conditions that drive people from their homes.

I consider staffing, training, surveillance, community involvement, and the political commitment required to sustain border security. The discussion also turns toward weapons moving south from the United States and the difficult policy choices that flow from that trade. Better equipment is only part of the answer. The argument calls for coordinated enforcement and international cooperation, supported by a willingness to address uncomfortable questions at home.
