Does our commitment to liberty extend to people whose choices we dislike? John Stuart Mill’s On Liberty provides the starting point for a July 2024 reflection on individual freedom, personal responsibility, and the limits of imposing our own beliefs on others. The test is not whether we defend choices we already approve of.
I connect that principle to religion, speech, books, healthcare decisions, and the peaceful transfer of political power. Liberty requires room for disagreement, including expressions we may find offensive. This is an argument about the principles that should guide public life, rather than a survey of current law: if we claim freedom for ourselves, we must be willing to protect it for our neighbors.
