Who should decide which books a student may read in a public school library? I consider the conflict among students' freedom to inquire, school boards' educational responsibilities, and parents' authority over their children's upbringing. The disputes in Board of Education v. Pico and Wisconsin v. Yoder bring those competing claims into focus.
This October 2023 essay distinguishes disagreement with a book's viewpoint from questions about educational suitability, then considers religious freedom and education outside public schools. I argue that protecting a family's choices should not require imposing its beliefs on every other family. America includes people with deeply different convictions; students should have room to encounter those differences and form their own judgments.
