Description

Greenland, NATO, and the obligations of American power take the form of a fictional allegory about a watchman, a woman, and an emerald. Across an imagined relationship beginning in postwar Copenhagen, a promise to protect becomes entangled with the desire to possess.

The emerald represents Greenland; a vault and its flags carry the alliance’s covenant. Shared defense, unequal burdens, and remembered sacrifice give way to a dangerous question: does keeping something safe entitle the guardian to take it? Written in January 2026, the story uses the biblical Leviathan and a river’s hidden undertow to examine what happens when strength no longer accepts the limits of its own promises.
