Description

Does universal basic income solve economic insecurity, or reveal how badly the system needs to change? In this July 2024 episode, I consider guaranteed-income experiments, possible funding sources, and the difference between helping people through hardship and creating the conditions for them to earn a dependable living. Recognizing the value of assistance does not settle the larger policy question.

I argue for wages, housing, education, and childcare that make individual success more achievable. Edmund Burke’s willingness to consider change in order to preserve an institution provides a conservative starting point. The question is whether public resources should focus on compensating for insecurity or changing its causes, and how to avoid abandoning families while pursuing those changes.
