What can the Elaine massacre and the fight for due process teach us about greatness? The 1919 Elaine massacre and the legal struggle of twelve Black men in Arkansas frame this reflection on courage, perseverance, and constitutional rights. I consider William Howard Taft's call to greatness alongside his racial prejudices and his service as Chief Justice.
Greatness is not simply a matter of talent or determination. Poverty, family responsibilities, and circumstances beyond our control can change what achievement looks like. I argue that we should recognize the effort required to overcome those barriers while refusing to measure a life only by public success. Helping our families and communities matters, and defending another person's rights can make more opportunity possible.
