I don’t really have roommates at Cons, and I’ll tell you why in this episode.
Roommates can help with expenses, help if makeup, costumes, and make your time at the con go really fast, but when you get to a certain age, you may be less inclined to A – stay at a Con that long and B – room with anyone because you’ve gotten set in your ways.
If you’re used to having a roommate, like you did in college – you might not be as bothered. College – at least for the first two years – wasn’t a place where I got much sleep. My roommate liked to be up until 3am, which only gave me 3 hours of sleep, while he slept until noon. That’s great, but there was no respect for my space at all and I was after-all paying for half the ridiculous room rate at college.
It does reduce cost, but it can also lead to drama, so make sure you know well the people that you’re staying with. If you’ve only met them online, that could be an issue. Especially with the 20 somethings. Make sure you have payments arranged and divided and that there’s open communication about who’s sleeping where, who’s paying what and when and many other details that need to be sorted.
