This is not the episode where I tell you who to follow, support, collaborate with, or what fandoms you SHOULD be a part of in order to grow your following.
This is about who you gravitate towards, and those parts of the geek culture and fandoms that you already enjoy – its more about how you share it than engineering an Instagram feed.
You Cosplay, or you Podcast, or you are a creator on YouTube or another space – probably Twitch
What you do in those spaces should give you an idea of who to look for – what Facebook group or groups suit you, the comfortable content, the people that are already your go-tos in the space you’re in.
I’ve had a couple great exchanges with people that I’d never thought I would talk to, but here we are. I’ve also interviewed many Cosplayers, and found a lot of commonalities with them
Part of that is getting good at reaching out in a respectful and not-so-asky sort of way. Asks are some of the problem with outreach – just cold asks, especially if you’re a brand like I am can be very off putting
Try this instead:
For those people that you eventually want to collaborate with – put alerts on for them where appropriate – IG is usually the easiest and engage with their content, but do so because you like the content, not because you’re going after an ask.
Once you’re organized and you’ve spend some time talking, then send a DM or respond to their stories and start more conversations – remember they probably have a lot of people doing this, so do what you can to stand out – be specific, honest, sincere and share information with them – build the relationship. See if you are following each other and building trust.
This also let’s you see IF you want to work with the person that you’ve gotten to know – you might find that it’s not something that you want to take on OR that coordinating is not where you want to focus your effort.
