FOMO One feeling I’ve often had with Cosplay is missing out on things. Cons, builds, the stuff, building a following – there’s a lot to miss out on – at least that’s the feeling.
FoMo is marketing. Its building the emotional response to a product or a service to get a click, a download, or even a follow. It has a motive. There’s a reason you want to use it or create it, but realize this is often why you’re feeling it – you are being marketed to all the time – sometimes 1000s of times a day and you don’t even realize it.
What can you do to reduce that feeling of missing out?
For me, I had to realize that I can’t do it all. I can’t be everywhere, on all platforms, building reach all the time, being on lives, showing support for everyone, and still create my own content that contributes to the audience and Cosplayers that the Cast supports.
Missing out means accepting choices. There are always choices – what you focus on and what you get done – the content you create becomes the focus.
I also work hard to minimize the message of missing out. It does get used and from a marketing perspective it’s an easy way to get buy-in and ‘quick wins’ on your pitch. Don’t delay, act now, etc.
Focusing and thinking about what’s important to you and being choosy as well as protecting your time can reduce that feeling of missing out. Realize there’s only so much you can do, buy, or be a part of. It’s ok to miss a few things here and there. Yes we only live once, but when you get intentional on that, then it starts to get interesting. I see Cosplayers getting very intentional with their self-brands – identifying themselves as go-to investments for collaborations, Influencer marketing, and brand deals.
