Nervous to be on camera, be in crowds, be in the spotlight? Is this way the eff out of your comfort zone?
Let me tell you. Being “on” in front of people can be overwhelming. I still have my moments where I really don’t think I’m ready for Live streaming, or public speaking, or getting back in front of the camera
What do you do about social anxiety when cosplay is a very social space to be in?
It’s really about participating and building. You don’t have to be social to build – you can turn it into that if you want to.
Find the know-like-trust circles to run in – your ‘tribe’ [as my mentor would say].
Let people know if something is bothering you – at a con, in what you post [because social media is still a veil – you only see the tip of the iceberg].
Often getting over social anxiety is going through it. This doesn’t work for everybody. Exploring where it stems from and understanding how you feel is a good place to start. I can’t speak as an expert, just from my own experience
What worked for me:
Starting small and just putting something easy together to get it out there. Podcasts, Stories, and a few posts of me here and there – no heavy editing, just talking about what I thought was important.
If you look at why, focus on why, focus on the cause of what you’re doing versus being in the spotlight it gets easier.
Think of it all as practice. I like to think I’m working towards something. The more I do it, the easier it is, the faster, the better, and I think of ways to improve. All of this reduces those moments when I’m in front of people looking for something to say (or not to say).
