Topic: Christians Attitude in WorshipText: John 4:23-24IntroductionIt is often said that “Our attitude determines our altitude”. It doesn’t matter how talented, skilful, educated a man is, if he has wrong attitude, he cannot go far. A definition says, ATTITUDE is a manner of showing one’s inward thoughts and feelings.“For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he (Proverbs 23:7). Attitude is our action. It is how we respond to our environment.Cain & AbelGenesis 4:3-5, shows us that our attitude cannot be separated from our person, “And the Lord respected Abel and his offering” (v.5).Attitude of JesusYour attitude should be the same as that of Jesus…. (Philippians 2:5-8). When we have the wrong attitude towards worship, our worship becomes unacceptable to God.From the passage we read (John 4:24);*God has expectations as far as worship is concerned (v.23)*His expectations must be strictly adhered to (v.24) if our worship will be acceptableWhat is Worship?Looking at the etymology of the word “Worship”, it comes from two old English words “Weorth”, which means “worth” and “scipe” or “ship,” which means shape or quality. Friendship- quality of being a friend, Kingship- quality of being a king. So, Worth-ship is the quality of having worth or of being worthy.Worship means to declare worth or attribute worth. What is Christian Worship? Some Misconceptions *Worship is the same as music*Worship is a mood*Worship is confined to a placeWorship is a Response (Genesis 22:1-5)Christian Worship is our total response to who God has revealed Himself to be. •God initiates worship•Worship demands obedience•Worship is a journeyWorship is a Lifestyle (Romans 12:1)Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship (NIV)So here’s what I want you to do, God helping you: Take your everyday, ordinary life—your sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking-around life—and place it before God as an offering. Embracing what God does for you is the best thing you can do for Him (Message)•Worship should not be a Sunday, Sunday experience but Sunday to Sunday experience.Worship is Active (1 Peter 2:9)But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.•In both Hebrew and Greek, worship is a verb—involves actions: barak (bow, to knee), hala (to shout, praise), proskuneo (fall down to kiss the ground), latreo (render service)In worship, we declare the praise (worth) of God through singing, clapping, shouting, kneeling, silence…..•Worship is both a personal (private) and Community (Congregational) experience.Attitudes of True Worshippers1.PREPARATIONa)Spiritual preparationPsalm 24:3-4Who may ascend into the hill of the LORD?Or who may stand in His holy place?4 He who has clean hands and a pure heart,Who has not lifted up his soul to an idol,Nor sworn deceitfully.b)Physical preparation2.REVERENCE Ecclesiastes 5:1-2Be careful about going to the Temple. It is better to go there to learn than to offer sacrifices like foolish people who don't know right from wrong. 2 Think before you speak, and don't make any rash promises to God. He is in heaven and you are on earth, so don't say any more than you have to (GNT)3.THANKFULNESSPsalm 100:4Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name.Enter with the password: “Thank you!” Make yourselves at home, talking praise. Thank Him. Worship Him (Message)4.FAITHHebrew 11:6 But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarde
