UNITY IN CHURCHUnity in the church is a priority in the mind of Jesus Christ. If we cannot be united as a local church, then it will be impossible for us to talk about unity in Christendom.In John 17:21, the Prayer of Jesus for His followers is “That they all may be one, as you, Father, are in Me, and I in You, that they also may be one in Us, that the world may believe that You sent Me.” Oneness can only be achieved where love is found. Amos the prophet asked “Can two work together unless they are agreed?” (Amos 3:3).I Corinthians 1:10, Paul pleaded with the church in Corinth by saying “Now, I plead with you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you all speak the same thing, and that there be no division among you, but that you be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment.” Church, we are not competitors but a team. Everybody must join hands to contribute their quota. Nobody should cause division because such divisions are not of Christ and those who try it must be avoided by the church (Rom. 16:17).True followers must endeavour to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace (Eph. 4:3). As mentioned earlier, love is the only way to achieve this bond. “Hatred will stir up quarrels but love covers all sin” (Prov. 10:12). A strong warning is written for our good in Leviticus 19:17 “You shall not hate your brother in your heart. You shall surely rebuke your neighbour and not bear sin because of him.” Hate cripples the one who hates not necessarily the one hated.Let there be unity in the church. But remember charity begins at home. God help us all. Amen.
