Description

The fourth of the ten commandments is to “remember the sabbath day and keep it holy.” The religious leaders in Jesus’day placed particular importance on this commandment. They developed and enforced strict rules about how to observe the sabbath day. In today’s scripture reading, Jesus and his disciples test these rules. When the religious leaders challenge Jesus, he reminds them that, “The sabbath was made for humankind, and not humankind for the sabbath.” Many people today say they are“spiritual but not religious.” They view Christianity as a set of arcane rules that make little sense. It may come as a surprise to them that Jesus was critical of any rules that were deemed more important than the needs of God’s people. Our scripture reading is Mark 2:23-3:6.
