Can you remain loyal to someone without defending everything they do? Loyalty is important. But what happens when our loyalty to a person, political leader, or nation begins to blind us to the truth? As Christians, how do we remain faithful to God when the people we respect make decisions that contradict His ways?
In 1 Samuel 14:24–30, King Saul makes a reckless oath, forbidding his exhausted soldiers from eating until he has taken revenge on his enemies. His son Jonathan, unaware of the command, eats some honey and regains his strength. When Jonathan discovers what his father has done, he recognizes that Saul's decision has harmed the very people he was supposed to lead. Jonathan teaches us an important lesson: Loyalty does not require blindness to the truth.
Originally preached just before the 2020 presidential election, this sermon from Pastor Jason explores biblical discernment, Christian political engagement, blind loyalty, godly leadership, and what it means to follow Jesus above every earthly allegiance.
Whether we're evaluating political leaders, navigating disagreements, or confronting the failures of people we love, our commitment to Christ must shape how we respond.
Jesus calls us to love God with all our hearts and to love our neighbors as ourselves. That love doesn't require us to ignore wrongdoing, excuse foolish decisions, or abandon the truth. Instead, it calls us to respond with humility, honesty, and grace.
We can love our country without defending everything it does. We can respect our leaders without agreeing with every decision. And we can love people enough to tell them the truth. The question isn't simply who deserves our loyalty. It's whether our loyalty reflects the character of Jesus.
Are we following Christ faithfully, or have we allowed our earthly allegiances to lead us away from Him?
