IT IS YOUR DECISIONS, AND NOT YOUR  DESIRES, THAT DETERMINE YOUR DESTINY.

That night Jacob got up and took his two wives, his two female servants and his eleven sons and crossed the ford of the Jabbok. After he had sent them across the stream, he sent over all his possessions. So Jacob was left alone, and a man wrestled with him till daybreak. When the man saw that he could not overpower him, he touched the socket of Jacob’s hip so that his hip was wrenched as he wrestled with the man. Then the man said, “Let me go, for it is daybreak.” But Jacob replied, “I will not let you go unless you bless me.” The man asked him, “What is your name?” “Jacob,” he answered. Then the man said, “Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel, because you have struggled with God and with humans and have overcome.” Jacob said, “Please tell me your name.” But he replied, “Why do you ask my name?” Then he blessed him there. So Jacob called the place Peniel, saying, “It is because I saw God face to face, and yet my life was spared.”

Genesis 32:22-30 NIV

ALLOW GOD TO CHANGE MY IDENTITY

Many of us are wrestling between who we’ve become and who we’re supposed to be.

  1. WE HOLD ON TO OUR PAST.

But if from there you seek the LORD your God, you will find him if you seek him with all your heart and with all your soul. Deuteronomy 4:29 NIV

“Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? Isaiah 43:18-19 NIV

I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.”  Isaiah 43:18-19 NIV

  1. WE HOLD ON TO OUR SECRETS.

He who conceals his sins does not prosper, but whoever confesses and renounces them finds mercy.  Proverbs 28:13

When I refused to confess my sin, my body wasted away, and I groaned all day long. Day and night your hand of discipline was heavy on me.  My strength evaporated like water in the summer heat. Finally, I confessed all my sins to you and stopped trying to hide my guilt. Psalm 32:3-5 NLT

I said to myself, “I will confess my rebellion to the LORD.” And you forgave me! All my guilt is gone.  Psalm 32:3-5

  1. WE HOLD ON TO OUR CONTROL.

That is why the Holy Spirit says, “Today when you hear his voice, don’t harden your hearts as Israel did when they rebelled, when they tested me in the wilderness. There your ancestors tested and tried my patience, even though they saw my miracles for forty years. So I was angry with them, and I said, ‘Their hearts always turn away from me. They refuse to do what I tell them.’ So in my anger I took an oath: ‘They will never enter my place of rest.’” Hebrews 3:7-11 NLT

BROKENNESS PRECEDES BREAKTHROUGH.

The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.  Psalm 51:17 NIV

“God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.” Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. 1 Peter 5:5-6 NIV
