In 1984, the Penguins were a floundering and largely unpopular franchise with an uncertain future. That’s when they were presented with a golden opportunity to turn things around. If they could somehow procure the top overall pick in the draft, they could select a teen phenom by the name of Mario Lemieux. However, getting there would require something totally unorthodox: doing everything possible to NOT WIN games.
