The race of mankind is just too wicked to repent and therefore the only potential end to this worldly conflict would be the death of faith and therefore the damnation of humanity. Christ foresaw the conflict He would bring and willed it to be, so that some would be saved. Emphatically, He declared that He came to throw a sword into humanity.
R.C. Lenski: If Christ had not come, the earth would have gone on undisturbed in its sin and its guilt until the day of its doom. Now Christ has come and He came to take away that sin and that guilt that resulted from man’s perversion. Some repent, but most cling to their sin, and two distinct camps emerge.
Jesus came to cast a sword into the world , drawing a line directly down the middle of our household that all people hereafter will be defined primarily, not by wherever they stand on the topic of the day, BUT by where they stand in their relationship with Him. He is the dividing line of history.
