We finally decide to go exercise and we run to the gym. Before we know it, we are 45 minutes in and just bouncing around a bunch of exercises. Before long, we are working out for a few years and not once have we assessed ourselves.
Why Should You Do An Assessment?
Running a fitness assessment is way more important then it seems. A great example is you wouldn't want a surgeon to cut you open without first taking imaging and seeing what is wrong.
Doing an assessment will help show you all of your strength and weaknesses. Maybe your knees cave in when you squat, maybe your never realized that you need to work more muscle endurance. Ignoring this issues can lead to way more issues then working out can solve. You will be surprised, how much damage you can do to your body by squatting wrong, from something as simple as your knees coming in.
How To Run An Assessment?
There are so many different types of assessments you can do, from plank tests to cardiovascular test. So pick a few based up what your goals are.
Regardless of your goals, everyone should be doing an Overhead Squat Assessment.
The Overhead Squat Assessment is a quick way to figure out some basic under and overactive muscles.
Underactive muscles are ones that need to be worked more, while overactive need to be stretched more.
If we go with the knock-knock knees when you are squatting, this can tell us that your adductors and TFL are tight and need to be stretch. While your glutes are super weak, so we should be focusing on glute bridges and some lateral abductor exercises.
Re-assessments can also help use figure out if what we are doing is working. Wouldn't it be great if we could track the way we move and make sure we are doing the most with our time.
