When the late great Charlotte Rae came to New York in 1948, she found work in cabaret clubs and nightclubs. She developed a comedy act, and circa 1955 put out a solo comedy record, and began appearing on TV. She also was a sensation on Broadway, originating the role of MAMMY YOKUM in "Li'l Abner" which also featured Edie Adams, Julie Newmar and Tina Louise. Way before her "Facts of Life" fame, Charlotte played the wife of Leo Schnauzer (Al Lewis) on "Car 54 Where Are You." Here's the early comedy of CHARLOTTE RAE
