Rose DiGiovanni gave birth to Ralph on October 4, 1959, at a time when conventional medicine advised parents to put children with Down syndrome in an institution. In Rose's case, it was a pediatrician she'd never met before, who walked into her room when she was alone, to pronounce that her son would be just like the tree outside her window: he would never walk, talk, or do anything healthy children would do.
Though only 28 years old, Rose threw him out of her room with the order to stay away from her and her baby, determined to help Ralph reach his full potential. With the love and support of her husband, family, and friends, Ralph had a full, happy, productive life that included going through the special education system, graduating from high school, having a 20-plus year career at a local hospital, reading novels, dancing, going to WWE matches, and learning how to ballroom dance. His sense of humor and genuine desire to help other people remain core aspects of his legacy.
Episode 9 offers inspiration, hope, and proof that an individual can live a meaningful, joyful life with Down syndrome - and bring countless joy to others.
