One day you finally knew
what you had to do, and began,
though the voices around you
kept shouting
their bad advice –
though the whole house
began to tremble
and you felt the old tug
at your ankles.
“Mend my life!”
each voice cried.

You knew what you had to do,
though the wind pried
with its stiff fingers
at the very foundations,
though their melancholy
was terrible.
It was already late
enough, and a wild night,
and the road full of fallen
branches and stones.

determined to save
the only life you could save.

作者介绍
玛丽·奥利弗（Mary Oliver，1935年9月10日—2019年1月17日），美国诗人，生于俄亥俄州，以自然题材创作为特色，获普利策诗歌奖（1984年）和美国国家图书奖（1992年）。2019年因淋巴瘤逝世于佛罗里达家中，与摄影师莫莉·库克共同生活至2005年对方去世。
奥利弗与摄影师莫莉保持了超过40年的同性伴侣关系（1950年代末-2005年）。为了使自己专心沉浸在诗歌世界中，她小心翼翼地回避了任何一种有趣的职业，将物质需求降到最低。因为“如果你愿意保持好奇心，那么，你最好不要追求过多的物质享受。这是一种担当，但也是朝着理想生活的无限提升。”她唯一需要的是“独处的时光，一个能够散步、观察的场所，以及将世界再现于文字的机会”。为了满足这种需求，她选择在马萨诸塞州普罗温斯敦小镇建立隐居环境，使自己得以在一种不受干扰的情形下写作。
