With many Primary and Post Primary schools unable to reopen after the Christmas Holidays this morning a Leitrim teacher has called for the Department of Education to introduce a system similar to that being used in the north when it comes to taking the decision to close schools due to bad weather.
The calls from Leitrim Councillor James Gilmartin come as the North West is currently being hit by the first cold snap of weather in 2026.
The Independent Councillor says in Northern Ireland the Department of Education issued a centralised directive when it comes to such decisions being taken.
Cllr Gilmartin says a similar system should be introduced here and take the pressure of Schools Principals and Boards of Management.
