Leonard Bernstein tituleeris "Laulu maast" Mahleri suurimaks sümfooniaks. Kuuest laulust orkestrile koosnev teos on kirjutatud kahele lauljale. Saksa supertenor Jonas Kaufmann sai palju kriitikat, kui julges seda esitada üksi.
