Jesus' fantastic promise is that he was leaving to prepare a place for his disciples in his Father's house. "We don't know where you are going,how can we know the way" Thomas said.
Jesus' reply "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me", indicates that it is not directions we need to know but a person - Jesus. He IS the truth, the Word of God, and has been from the beginning - and through his death and resurrection he brings life to all who believe.
