Hace que..., Hace...meaning ago
1. To express how long something has been going on, in Spanish we use the following expression:
HACE + length of time + QUE + verb in the present tense
Hace dos años que vivo aquí. I have been living here for 2 years.
Hace dos días que Sally no viene a clase. Sally hasn't come to class for 2 days. (It has been 2 days since she has come to class.)
2. If you want to ask how long something has been going on, you use the following:
¿Cuánto tiempo hace que + verb in the present tense?
¿Cuánto tiempo hace que Sally trabaja aquí? How long has Sally been working here?
Hace tres semanas que Sally trabaja aquí. She has been working here for 3 weeks.
3. When using the preterit and maybe the imperfect, the "Hace + length of time + que" construction translates into ..."ago."
HACE + length of time + QUE + verb in the past tense
Hace dos años que viví aquí. I lived here 2 years ago.
Hace tres semanas que la conocí. I met her 3 weeks ago.
4. To ask how long ago something happened use:
¿Cuánto tiempo hace que + verb in the preterit?
¿Cuánto tiempo hace que llegaste a los EE.UU.s? How long ago did you arrive in the US?
Hace seis años que llegué. I arrived 6 years ago.
