When I think about Coach Yusuf Shakir none of the normal sports analogies come to mind. No football metaphors. No catchy slogans. No winning catchphrases. What comes to mind is a surfer. As you well know, surfers do not begin their ascent at the top of the wave but at the bottom.

 

They methodically maneuver to their platform, steady themselves, and wait for the next vehicle of momentum to pick them up and carry them to the destination.

This is how I see this awesome motivator, leader, and male role model. He positioned himself on a coaching platform and allowed his ability to articulate vision and purpose to raise him to the top and then he rode the wave all the way to the end. And what a ride it has been. Though we barely mentioned football, hear the phenomenal story of a man who used a football as a tool to demonstrate servant leadership and develop champions.
