We have a dangerous tendency to romanticize the early Church as being an example of perfection. The very reason we have many of the epistles - the letters written by apostles and early Church leaders - is because the churches were not functioning as they should. They needed the help of the Holy Spirit and the guidance of more mature Christians because they couldn’t get along and live out their faith in a way that reflected God’s grace.
