When the Apostle John wrote his second letter that appears in the New Testament, he was witnessing a duality. As Pastor Terry explains, Christianity was spreading and many followers of Christ were traveling to other towns to build up the Church and support local believers. At the same time, there were people who were spreading heresies within the Church, and John wrote this letter to warn these people.
