This is episode # 8 of the Joyride - a celebration of women who ride bikes! Each week I publish a new conversation with a different woman who rides a bike in some form or fashion.
Joyriders, I am stoked to chat with Monica Garrison, founder and head shero in charge of the growing organization
Black Girls Do Bike. Monica believes that the simple act of riding a bike can be the catalyst to wonderful and empowering experiences for women of all ages. What started as a simple idea in 2013 to connect lady cyclists has turned into a movement with more than
50 inclusive riding groups all over the country.
On this episode of the Joyride we'll also talk about Black Girls Do Bike, riding in Pittsburgh, the first BGDB national meetup in Atlanta this June, and how to be a good ally.
Here are timestamps to some of the topics we discuss in this show:
2:23 - Monica's first bike
4:40 - Solo/Family riding
6:47 - Every ride carry
10:30 - Speclialized Dolce + Drop bar love
12:00 - "where are all the black women on bikes?" + that time I met
Sharon from Philly
19:45 - Pain points & the safety dance
24:47 - What makes a good ally?
Wanna win a badass BGDB t-shirt like the one Monica is wearing above? Go to the
Instagram post for this page and tag a friend. You both will be entered to win the t-shirt. We'll announce the winner on Instagram on Friday, April 22 - the date the next podcast drops.
I hope you enjoy the show! Let me know what you think at girleatsbike[at]gmail.com.
