Summer is just around the corner, and Winchester’s Jim Barnett Park is gearing up for a season full of exciting events and activities. “We’re in full gear right now,” Chris mentioned, speaking about the preparation efforts. “Lifeguard training, clean water, getting the building spruced up – it’s a busy time.” He discussed the park’s strategy to ensure a successful season, emphasizing the importance of community involvement and the benefits of having professional lifeguards on staff year-round.

The park offers a variety of camps, including basketball with Handley staff, soccer camps led by the Shenandoah University coach, and other sports and recreational camps. “Our sports camps are phenomenal,” Chris said, “and we’ve got something for all ages.”
In addition to sports, the park hosts creative camps like Storytime Creation for preschoolers. There are even special events such as the Game of Skate on May 31st and the Fishing Rodeo on June 14th, which promises to be a fun-filled day for all ages. “It’s a great atmosphere,” Chris noted, highlighting the community spirit that permeates these events.
Another highlight of the summer will undoubtedly be the July 3rd fireworks event, aptly named Red, White, and Boom. Chris assured that this year's fireworks will be spectacular, with better planning and organization compared to last year’s misfire. The event is set to include a variety of activities, food vendors, and live music, making it a memorable night for families and friends.
This event also marks the kickoff of Parks and Recreation Month, which will feature numerous activities celebrating Winchester’s parks and community spirit. Chris stressed the importance of early booking for the fireworks vendor to ensure a smooth event: “We’re locked in,” he confirmed, making sure everything is set for an unforgettable celebration.
