Our conversation today with Tony Baker from Frederick County Parks & Recreation gave us all the details for several events and programs that are happening in the next few months. We also talked about the wide range of jobs that are currently available with Parks & Rec. You can find those by clicking here.
Tony told us about:
- Trails for Miles, now in its fourth year is a mixed surface four-mile race through the paved paths and wooded trails of Sherando Park. It happens on Saturday, April 1. Proceeds from the race will benefit the I'm Just Me Movement and The Arc of Northern Shenandoah Valley as April is Autism Awareness Month. There is also an option to participate in an untimed One Mile Fun Run/Walk. Get more details and register at https://www.runatthetop.net/trails4miles
- Kite Fest is a FREE family-friendly event happening on Sunday, April 2, 2023, from 2pm - 5pm at a new location this year - the historic Kernstown Battlefield. The first 24 families to arrive will receive FREE kites courtesy of Incredible Flying Objects, while Bam Bam's BBQ will provide delicious food for purchase. Other FREE activities include egg hunts for ages 2-6 & 7-11, face painting, lawn games, and more! Find more information on their Facebook page by clicking here.
- Summer camps as well as the Camp basicREC summer camp program will open registration on Thursday, April 13, 2023. There are limited slots and they fill VERY quickly, so mark your calendars! This year there will be seven basicREC sites and one middleREC site. MiddleREC is the middle school basicREC program and is new for summer this year. The Youth Development Center will host the middleREC program and one basicREC program. If you're a parent to an elementary student and a middle school student and would like to enroll them both in the basicREC/middleREC program, then you only have one drop off location! Camp BasicREC is a program that opens at 6:30am and closes at 6pm. There are pool days and field trips throughout the summer.
- Again this year, FredCo Parks & Rec will manage the Apple Blossom races: Valley Health 10K and Shenandoah Valley Orthodontics Kids' Bloomin' Mile. Learn more about both of them and find registration information at: https://www.runatthetop.net/2023-apple-blossom-races
- The Youth Trout Derby returns to Clear Brook Park on Friday, May 12, 2023, at 5pm. Families are encouraged to bring their young anglers (ages 4-14) to catch stocked trout and other fish. On-site registration begins at 5pm and lasts until 5:50pm. Fishing will be from 6pm - 7:30pm with awards being presented right after. Participants must bring their own fishing pole, bait, tackle, and gear to reel in the "big one". Awards and door prizes are in the works to make for the best fishing experience this year! The lake is closed to public fishing after the stocking until the event is over. Get more details by clicking here.
