It seems taxes have spiritual implications that many have not considered for a long time. The Jews of Jesus' day were, like Americans, double-minded about the power of Rome's heavy-handed 'tributes.' Jesus was very clear about the tax system, and He did not appear to support the alliances of church and state in His time...or the exploitation of the people in the sevice of empire building.
