Today our guest is doctoral student in Applied Health Sciences at University of Manitoba, Nick Kosmenko. We discuss his doctoral research on the journeys of rural Indigenous elite athletes that utilizes an oral storytelling methodology to unlock and unpack the lived experiences of these athletes. Nick’s research is unique and grounded in a two-eyed seeing approach which has yielded prestigious scholarships like the Vanier Canadian Graduate Scholarship and the C.D. Howe Memorial Fellowship from the Centre for Creative Wrting and Oral Cultures at University of Manitoba. We talk the discrepancies between rural and ubran training infrastructure, being an athlete from the north, the research and ethical implications of oral methodologies, and consider what rol ceremony as research has on the subject and the academy more broadly.
