Today our guest is doc­tor­al stu­dent in Applied Health Sci­ences at Uni­ver­si­ty of Man­i­to­ba, Nick Kos­menko. We dis­cuss his doc­tor­al research on the jour­neys of rur­al Indige­nous elite ath­letes that uti­lizes an oral sto­ry­telling method­ol­o­gy to unlock and unpack the lived expe­ri­ences of these ath­letes. Nick­’s research is unique and ground­ed in a two-eyed see­ing approach which has yield­ed pres­ti­gious schol­ar­ships like the Vanier Cana­di­an Grad­u­ate Schol­ar­ship and the C.D. Howe Memo­r­i­al Fel­low­ship from the Cen­tre for Cre­ative Wrt­ing and Oral Cul­tures at Uni­ver­si­ty of Man­i­to­ba. We talk the dis­crep­an­cies between rur­al and ubran train­ing infra­struc­ture, being an ath­lete from the north, the research and eth­i­cal impli­ca­tions of oral method­olo­gies, and con­sid­er what rol cer­e­mo­ny as research has on the sub­ject and the acad­e­my more broadly.
