Today our guest is Indigenous artist and curator with the Ociciwan Contemporary Art Collective, Becca Taylor. We discuss the showing of Ociciwan’s 8th collaborative project “in memoriam.…” on July 18 at the Francis Winspear Centre for Music in Edmonton that showcases the collaborative energy of Indigenous Art Collective – Postcommodity and American composer Alex Waterman. “in memoriam.…” takes Robert Ashley’s original scores about famous Indigenous male national heroes and adds a 5th Memoriam dedicated to 3 amazing Indigenous women from Alberta composed by Postcommodity and Waterman but performed by a number of Indigenous musical guests from Alberta. Becca is the project lead on “in memoriam.…” and we discuss the generative and supportive energy of art collectives and Ociciwan’s mandate to promote, enhance, and showcase Indigenous contemporary art throughout Alberta. Though new to the medium of music, Becca is an accomplished curator in the Indigenous art community having spent a year as the Aboriginal Curator In-residence at the Indigenous-run and operated Urban Shaman Art Gallery in Winnipeg and is currently completing the Indigenous Research and Curriculum Program at the Banff Centre for the Arts.
