Altheia Richardson’s career at Clemson University spans more than 28 years and has grown her passion to make the institution’s community a better place with regard to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
She currently serves as the Assistant Vice President for Strategic Diversity Leadership. In this role, she provides leadership in university-wide strategic planning for inclusive excellence. She also leads several strategic planning efforts for the Division of Inclusion and Equity.
Throughout her many roles at Clemson, Altheia has advocated for the needs of underrepresented/underserved populations as well as lead efforts to increase the intercultural competence of students, faculty, and staff.
In 1996, Altheia developed and led Clemson’s first multicultural affairs department, now named the Harvey and Lucinda Gantt Multicultural Center. She continued this role before moving into her current position. Altheia also co-chaired the task force that created the institution’s first diversity plan. As a part of this initiative, she co-authored the accepted proposal to create the first Senior Diversity Officer position. She has also provided leadership in the administration of campus climate research for students.
Altheia is pursuing her Ph.D. in Education Leadership with a concentration in Higher Education at Clemson, hoping to graduate in 2020. Altheia and her husband, Taji, have two daughters, Zari and Akilah.
