A hardware wallet is a dedicated mini-computer whose entire purpose (both hardware and software) is limited only to crypto transacting. It is thus a more secure way to store crypto, isolated from "hot" internet-connected devices that have much more code, many more features, and consequently many more vulnerabilities.
