The International Union for the Conservation of Nature declared the monarch butterfly endangered last week, citing that the North American monarch population “has shrunk by between 22% and 72% over the past decade.” Chicagoans are seeing firsthand how sparse the local summer population has become, but the black-and-orange butterfly is still not on the U.S.’s list of endangered species.
