Description

Vance is introduced in the "present" timeline while he is a Yale Law School student and has moved away from his Appalachian heritage. Usha is his girlfriend, and he has the chance to pursue a renowned internship. However, he is pulled towards family matters, particularly his mother Bev's drug addiction. After receiving a frantic phone from his sister Lindsay, he finds out that his mother doesn't have health insurance and won't have anywhere to stay after she is released from the hospital. This leads him to drive for ten hours from New Haven to Middletown, Ohio. A patchwork of recollections from almost ten years ago is stitched throughout the events from the year 2010. J.D.'s family was from Kentucky, but they were raised in Ohio, and their so-called "hillbilly values" were essential to their way of life.
