As the holiday hustle starts to build, how do you feel? Do you feel pressure to make and capture all the moments? The holidays can bring a lot of, "should be doing this" or should be doing that." And well-intended should-bes don't end up even close to your intentions.
Emotions can run high during the holiday season, too; perhaps triggered from lack or loss of loved ones. Gone with loved ones passed or absent are their own holiday traditions and there is a void of what was or might have been.
In this episode host Sondra Doty shares how she has felt pressure to always make all the moments happen. She talks about how she went a little overboard and has now learned to create healthier boundaries. In her mind, she used to think if she didn't make certain moments happen, Christmas was ruined. Raise your hand if you feel like you have had to "save Christmas." (LOL!)
With the holidays also comes many traditions. Traditions make moments happen, but they also can bring added pressure. Make sure traditions don't cause added pressure, stress or anxiety. Evaluate the moments YOU want to make. If those moments cause stress, ask yourself why. Maybe you need to pause a tradition for awhile and see if it's worth brining back in the future.
Many of us love capturing holidays moments by pictures and video. Sondra how she had to find a better balance with this, too. She had to learn how to "be in the moments" while capturing the moments and milestone. We have such easy access to take pictures or videos than ever before. So, the temptation that you have to capture it ALL of them is there.
The guilt we feel about the moments we missed or weren't able to capture is real. It's beyond hard to be there for every moment. It's important to focus on times you were there.
"Moments" are made through the wonder in our little humans eyes-not because they're captured. So, we must stop, listen, see and be a part of that excitement!
Let's take moment to think back to when our parents were younger and their parent's didn't have access to quick grab their phone to take a video or picture. They got to sit and really enjoy the experience in front of them.
Really evaluate what you are adding on to your plate during this holiday season. It's not solely your responsibility to make everything happen or capture every moment.
Word To Your Mothers wants to wish you a peaceful, restful, holiday season. Moments will happen and you will be able to peacefully capture them. Happy Holidays!
