The famous mathematician/philosopher Pascal once said, "There are two kinds of men: the righteous who think they are sinners and the sinners who think they are righteous." His point? The two different kinds of thinking lead to two different lives and sets of relationships with others. One man can connect with everybody. The other selectively connects with people like him. One man avoids certain kinds of people. The other engages those same people. One steers clear. The other draws near. One loves. The other is pseudo-religious. Why make the distinction? Because Jesus was more like one and NOT like the other. When it came to loving people in his context, Jesus has only one filter - an honest need. When he found this in someone he would "jump in the the boat" and make it to that person's shore whatever the winds or waves he had to face culturally. Jesus was dangerously attractive, inviting, and controversial. Why? Because he didn't only love those close to him or like him well, he loved perfect strangers, unacceptables, and undesirables well and broke the rules of his culture to do it.
