Isabelle Adjani performance in 1981 Possession really was great. She really put so much emotion and anger in a role of a woman that on the verge of a mental breakdown. She was perfect for this movie because her acting style was similar to Daniel day Lewis, who ironically was also her ex and father of her second child, over the top and emotional. The movie itself is what if marriage story was directed by david cronenberg. She had so many great acting scenes throughout the movie but the subway scene is truly the greatest work of her career. If you thought Toni Collette was crazy in hereditary wait till you see the subway scene in hereditary. She really put in everything for her performance at the subway as her character has a mental breakdown. It’s crazy she tried to commit suicide after the movie wrapped since it took such an emotional toll on her. She really did deserved the Cannes and Cesar award she won for best actress

It's one of the best and most incredible performances I've ever seen. Just her piercing eyes have been stuck in my mind since I first saw Possession around a decade ago. And, one aspect that gets underrated about her performance is her second role as the school teacher Helen. Such a sweet, kind, and different performance than as Anna. She shows in this movie her versatility because she goes as big as an actor or actress can get as Anna and then plays a much more subtle character in Helen. The Anna performance had to be really big and Adjani is the perfect actress to portray an intense character like that. There's been many actresses recently trying to do something similar to Adjani in Possession, but they lack the vulnerability she conveys. Even Toni Collette, who was incredible in Hereditary and deserved an oscar nom, owes a lot to Adjani's performance in Possession.

When she stared into the camera after she delivered “two women wrestling in the mud at each other throats” monologue her eyes are chilling as fuck. And then after that scene the audience doesn’t even get to breathe because subway scene immediately happens after. The whole movie was a whole acting reel for Isabelle there not a moment of subtle acting at all. It’s crazy over the top for her and she fucking nails it. I can’t think of another female performance that matches her. IMHO she really is the best female acting I’ve ever seen. Even the Helen character was intense sometimes too especially when she lusting after mark.

I agree that she is amazing in this movie, but Possession was directed by Andrzej Zulawski. There are some amazing looking scenes, but I wouldn't say it was primarily a body horror movie. It's more emotional and psychologically tolling.
I also never heard of her attempting suicide. I'd like to see some sources on that. You don't need to exaggerate her performance because it speaks for itself.

Actually he talks shit about her thought out the whole video calling her vain and having an ego. He talks about her suicidal attempt as if she was being a drama queen like she was looking for attention. It’s kinda fucked up. I don’t think he cared or realized how psychological damaging the role was for her. I think she became more “vain” because of posssesion and she developed a personality of being a snob as a coping mechanism

No truer words have ever been spoken. That break down in the subway Jesus Christ!
But everything about her performance was so good the demented smirks, those noises she made when she was staring at the cross, pretty much every scene she was in she gave 110%.
And yes she did have to go through severe psychological therapy after she made that and I can totally see why.
