On March 26, 1997, 39 members of the group Heaven’s Gate were found dead in a house in Rancho Santa Fe. The leader of the group, Marshall Applewhite was among the deceased. The members had orchestrated a mass suicide with the goal of reaching a space craft that was believed to be following the comet Hale-Bopp. In this episode we will examine the complex origins of the group that was co-founded in 1974 by Applewhite and Bonnie Lu Nettles.
