OrEd-T-21.4-Faith, Belief, and Vision.1

29. All special relationships are bargains with reality, and have sin as their goal. These seeming unions are adjusted toward the goal of sin. I will not forget that to bargain is to set a limit, and I hate any brother with whom I have a limited relationship. I may attempt to keep the bargain in the name of "fairness," sometimes demanding payment of myself, and sometimes of the other. With "fairness", I attempt to ease the guilt that comes with the accepted purpose of sin. That is why the Holy Spirit must change the purpose of the relationship to make it harmless to me, and useful to Him.

30. If I accept this change to holiness, I have accepted the idea of making room for truth. The source of sin is gone. No one allows a purpose to be replaced while he still desires it. I may imagine that I still experience sin's effects, but sin is not my purpose, and I no longer want it. Nothing is so cherished and protected as a goal the mind accepts. The mind will follow its goal, grimly or happily, but always with faith, and with the persistence that faith inevitably brings. If faith is placed in sin, the power of faith is never recognized. But if faith is placed in love, faith is always recognized.

31. It is strange to me that faith can move mountains. This is a small feat for such a power. As long as he believes he is in chains, faith can keep the Son of God in chains. And when he is released from chains, it will be because he no longer believes in them. Withdrawing faith that chains can hold him, he places faith in his freedom instead. It is impossible to place equal faith in opposite directions. What faith I give to sin, I take away from holiness. And what I give to holiness has been removed from sin.

32. Faith, belief and vision are the means by which the goal of holiness is reached. Through these means, the Holy Spirit leads me to the real world, away from all the illusions where my faith was laid. When I wander, He reminds me there is only one direction. This is His direction, the only one He ever sees. His faith, His belief and vision are all for me. And when I have accepted them completely instead of mine, I will not have need of them any longer. For faith, vision, and belief are meaningful only before the state of certainty is reached. Heaven is reached by these means, but in Heaven they are unknown.

33. It is impossible that the Son of God lack faith, but he can choose where he would have it placed. Faithlessness is not a lack of faith, but faith in nothing. Faith given to illusions does not lack power, for by faith the Son of God believes that he is powerless. So he is faithless to himself, but has strong faith in his illusions about himself. Using faith, perception, and belief I made a means for losing certainty and finding sin. By my faith in what I chose, I made what I desired. This mad direction was my choice.

34. The Holy Spirit has a use for all the means I made to find sin. But He uses these means to lead away from sin, because His purpose lies in the opposite direction. He sees the means I use, but He does not see the purpose for which they were made. He would not take the means from me, for He sees their value as a means for what He wills for me. I made perception so I could choose among my brothers, and seek for sin with them. The Holy Spirit sees perception as a means to teach me that the vision of a holy relationship is all I want to see. I will give my faith to holiness, desiring it, and believing in it, because of my desire.
