"They spent less than 10 minutes in the writer's room". Netflix’s WWE: Unreal docuseries may have promised to pull back the curtain on the larger-than-life world of professional wrestling—but it also unintentionally revealed just how thin that curtain really is.
Across multiple episodes and interviews, what stands out most is not just the backstage access or production secrets, but the shocking admission that WWE’s writing process often consists of planning by booking committee with no ownership, except for a small inner circle of executives making major calls while agents and producers scramble to fill in the gaps on the fly.
Director Chris Weaver, a self-proclaimed wrestling outsider, learned about key industry practices like “blading” on set and was denied access to crucial behind-the-scenes moments—such as John Cena's long-rumored heel turn. His lack of familiarity with wrestling lore only further highlights the chaotic storytelling structure of WWE, where story arcs are created with little long-term foresight and often reactively shaped by day-to-day backstage politics.
While fans and critics alike praise Unreal for its raw look at WWE's inner workings, the documentary inadvertently confirms what many wrestling purists have feared: WWE has no real storyline roadmap. Beyond a select few execs micromanaging key decisions, most matches and promos are coordinated last-minute by agents and talent with minimal direction.
This improvisational style may keep things flexible, but it also leads to disjointed storytelling and creative stagnation—an industry built on drama but devoid of narrative discipline.
