During the Academy Awards, actress Patricia Arquette used her Oscars acceptance speech to advocate for equal pay and women’s rights. On the surface it was a rousing speech with a strong message, however she later said:
“It’s time for all the women in America, and all the men that love women and all the gay people and all the people of color that’s we’ve all fought for to fight for us now.”
As a result, critics say her comments undermined people of color and the LGBT community. We discussed the intersectionality of race, sexual and gender identity and women’s rights, and questioned whether there is a divide in the feminist movement, featuring Wagatwe Wanjuki, writer, activist and speaker on gender-based violence.
